For many women, ADHD doesn’t exist in isolation — it moves and shifts throughout life, intertwined with hormonal changes. Our hormones influence everything from mood to memory, motivation, and focus. For women with ADHD, these fluctuations can significantly change how symptoms show up day to day.
In adolescence, hormonal surges can magnify impulsivity or emotional intensity. During pregnancy, some women notice an improvement in symptoms, only to find things feel harder after birth. Then comes perimenopause — a time when estrogen levels fluctuate wildly — often bringing an increase in forgetfulness, distraction, irritability, or overwhelm.
These changes aren’t imagined. Estrogen plays a key role in regulating dopamine, one of the neurotransmitters central to ADHD. When estrogen drops, dopamine levels can dip too, amplifying ADHD traits and making focus, planning, and emotion regulation harder than usual.
Understanding this connection can be life-changing. It helps women make sense of why they feel different at certain times, why medication or strategies that once worked may suddenly seem less effective, and most importantly — that it’s not a personal failure. It’s biology.
At our upcoming ADHD Seminar, “The Dance of Hormones and ADHD: A Journey of Understanding and Empowerment” will explore how hormonal changes across the lifespan intersect with ADHD. We’ll focus particularly on how to navigate these changes with neuroaffirming, self-compassionate strategies.
When we understand what’s happening in our bodies, we can stop fighting ourselves and start supporting ourselves.
We can approach this stage of life not with shame or fear, but with insight, acceptance, and strength.
